Sonja Ann Loucks

April 19, 1938 — June 3, 2024

Alexandria

Sonja Ann (Korup) Loucks, a dedicated educator and cherished member of her community, passed away on June 3, 2024, at St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota surrounded by her family. She was born on April 19, 1938, in Hunter, North Dakota, to her loving parents Carl C. and Nora A. Korup.

Sonja's passion for enriching young minds led her to a fulfilling career as a teacher. She shared her knowledge and wisdom in various schools including Clarissa, Underwood, Brandon, Villard, and Alexandria where she also served as a substitute teacher. Sonja's commitment to education left a lasting impact on the lives of many students.

After graduating from Hillsboro High School in North Dakota in 1956, Sonja pursued higher education at Concordia College in Moorhead. She majored in Home Economics with a minor in Physical Education and proudly obtained her bachelor's degree in 1960.

Sonja met the love of her life Robert James Loucks Jr. (“Bob”) at a campfire event at Wilderness Scout camp. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1961. After their honeymoon, Bob and Sonja taught in Underwood, Minnesota. In 1963, Bob attended graduate school at Syracuse University.   They returned to Minnesota, settling in Alexandria in 1964 where they raised their three wonderful children, Karen, David and Rob.

Beyond her professional achievements, Sonja was very active at First Lutheran Church. Sonja was known for the warmth and love she brought to her roles as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Her kind-hearted nature touched the lives of all who knew her.

In her leisure time, Sonja found joy in traveling alongside her beloved husband Bob. Together they embarked on adventures across all 50 states, revisiting many multiple times. They also explored Scandinavia and Canada. Sonja's creative spirit shone through her passion for quilting and cooking.

Sonja Ann Loucks is survived by her dear husband Bob, daughter Karen (Brent) Carlson, sons David Loucks, Rob (Carol) Loucks, three grandchildren (Nora (fiancé Jared Lind), Jana Carlson, and Hunter Loucks), brother Cordy (Gwen) Korup, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Carl and Nora Korup with whom she is now reunited in eternal peace.

The memory of Sonja's kindness and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in peace knowing that her legacy of love lives on through those she leaves behind.

Her favorite questions will live on with us forever: Did you check the weather? Got your wallet? Check to make sure nothing fell out of the car as we backed up…

And we will always remember her favorite phrase- Love You!
