Steven Edward Erickson was born October 5, 1943 in Watertown, SD, the son of Edward and Nora (Johnson) Erickson. He was raised on a farm near Waubay, SD and attended a one room school house near Ortley, SD. Steven attended Waubay High School where he played basketball and represented the school at the American Legion Boys State, graduating in 1961. He attended South Dakota State University, receiving a Bachelor of Sciences in Agriculture in 1969.
On September 2, 1967 Steven was united in marriage to Mary Lou Johnson. They had three sons; Hans (1969), Lars (1973), and Steven Jr. (1983). The couple made their home in Huron, SD. Steven taught agriculture at Huron High School from 1969-1972. He moved his family to Marshall, MN in 1972 to pursue a career in agriculture sales. He especially enjoyed representing Hawke and Co. at the Minnesota State Fair for more than 10 years.
While living in Marshall, Steven became the publisher of the Country Squire Shopper and Hendricks Pioneer newspapers. In 1981, he and his family began spending time at a lake home near Alexandria, MN. They moved to Alexandria permanently in 1989.
Steven was a loving father, son, brother, and uncle. He took particular joy in creating memorable family experiences during the holidays and on motorhome vacations across the country. Steven was an avid fisherman and gardener; he was known for his tomatoes, which he shared with everyone he knew. He enjoyed golf, cooking bean soup, and frying fish. Steven often took his sons and their friends to Twins and Viking games.
On Friday, August 3, 2018 Steven died at the age of seventy-four years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Steven is survived by his sons, Hans Erickson of Minneapolis, MN, Lars Erickson and partner, A.J. Prasad, of Seattle, WA and Steven Erickson, Jr. of Ferndale, CA; his ex-wife, Mary Lou Erickson; two sisters, Dorothy Henry and husband, Phillip, of Spearfish, SD and Marie Jones and husband, Bill, of rural Sturgis, SD; brother, Elton Erickson of Bullhead City, AZ; and many nieces, nephews grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers please direct memorials to Anderson Funeral Home. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home.
