Susan Ruth was born on October 11, 1940, in St. Paul, Minnesota the daughter of Russell and Ruth Johnson. The family lived in the Highland Park area of St. Paul where Susan attended St. Paul Central High School, graduating in 1958. She furthered her education at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, MN as well as the University of Minnesota, receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
While attending the U of M, Susan met Jay Diebold and on December 16, 1961 the couple was married at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. After their marriage they moved to the Netherlands, living there for three years before returning to Minnesota, eventually settling in Alexandria in 1973.
Family and friends were important to Susan and her two sons have fond memories of boating on Lake Carlos, playing frisbee and just hanging out on the water. Susan and Jay enjoyed a blessed life, with great memories of ski trips, trips to Florida with the boys, and going on several cruises with family and friends.
Susan was also an avid reader and card player. She volunteered at the local library, hospital and other area organizations. She was involved with several bridge groups, a member of P.E.O. and a member of Belle Lettres
She lived her life through the saying “The best way to have good friend is to BE a good friend.” She will be greatly missed but the memories she helped create will be treasured forever.
Susan died on Saturday, April 7, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Jay; sons, Jay (Sarah), and Michael; grandchildren, Jay, Lindsie, Meg and Kate; great-grandson, Killian; sister, Lynn Anderson; brother, Steve as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, from 4-7 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A Celebration of her Life will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Douglas County Library or the Lakes Area Humane Society.
