Sylvester John Frank Schmidt was born on June 30, 1921 one of three children to Frank and Elizabeth (Terfehr) Schmidt of Miltona Township. Sylvester attended grade school at Miltona school district #93. At the age of eight Sylvester started playing the drums and this hobby he continued until he played his last set at the age of 80. Sylvester lived his whole life in Miltona Township, during his life he participated on the Board of Directors of the School District and Township. Sylvester and Marietta Thoennes were married on September 8, 1942 and to this union 12 children were born. On November 1, 1979, Sylvester married Susan Loseth. The joining of their families brought together 13 children, to make their baker’s dozen.
When Sylvester was not busy farming or caring for his family, he was a long time member of the Eagles club and continued his passion of being a drummer in bands. His own band was the “Nomads”, he played in numerous other bands ended his drumming career as the drummer in Jimmy Jenson’s band. His children remember how special it was when he played at Sandy Beach or Hidden Valley. When he played at these venues they would get to go along and eat out and listen to their father’s music. He also, enjoyed playing cards and could always be found reading the latest newspaper.
Sylvester would answer to his nicknames “Schmidty” or “Uncle Wesser”, but was also known as a strong man who was not afraid to take charge. His children remember his strong work ethic, which is something that he instilled in them. His children especially
remember this work ethic and how they were given the opportunity to bail hay during the summer, even on the 4th of July. He was a man who was very proud of his family, and how each and every one of his children turned out in life.
Sylvester died and went to heaven on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Bethany Home at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susan; his children, Sylvester (Bev) Schmidt Jr, Sandie (Steve) Serba, Steve (Lavern) Schmidt, Stan (Cindy) Schmidt, Stu (Deb) Schmidt, Sid Schmidt, Shane (Vickie) Schmidt, Sue (Terry) Emter, Sterling Schmidt, Sheila (Brian) Fultz, all of Alexandria, and Mark Mickelson of Princeton; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and his sister, Luella Geris. He is preceded in death by his, parents, Frank and Elizabeth Schmidt; son, Sheldon Schmidt; daughter, Shirley Wogan; sister, Elizabeth Ekdahl and great granddaughter Mila Grace Schmidt.
