Sylvia Theresa Krason, 95, of Alexandria passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria at 11:00 AM, with a visitation taking place one hour prior to services at the church. A funeral luncheon will be held at the Alexandria Senior Center immediately following the service. Burial will be at St. Ann's Cemetery in Brandon.
Sylvia T. Krason was born at home in Chicago, Illinois on December 9, 1928 to Sebastian & Maryann Wiater. She was the youngest of their three surviving children. She attended St. Casmir school and graduated from it’s commercial high school. She went to work for the Treasury Department until her marriage to John Krason in June 1953. To this union a daughter, Joan, was born in July 1955. Sylvia became a single parent in 1957 and worked for different companies until 1983 when she returned to work for the government as an administrative assistant and Polish translator for her local Social Security Office. She retired in January of 1995 but remained active, joining St. Michael’s Golden Agers. She was President for several years until her move to Alexandria in June 2009. Sylvia joined the Senior Center and worked the front desk on Thursday afternoons for a few years. She also joined Daughters of Isabella for a time and helped serve coffee and rolls at St. Mary’s while she was able.
Sylvia went on her first vacation to Colorado in 1949, and a love of travel was born. She enjoyed taking escorted trips, and visited 48 states (missing CT and DE) and 9 countries, including Poland twice. She kept detailed notes of all her trips along with her photos in several binders. A love of travel was also instilled in her daughter, her traveling companion since the age of 7. Every 3 – 4 years a destination vacation to somewhere outside of Chicago was planned. After Joan’s marriage, travel became an almost annual event with Sylvia. After moving to Alexandria, she enjoyed going for rides in the areas in and around Douglas County with her daughter, usually stopping in for coffee somewhere along the way, even if it was just the drive-thru. Even close to the end she enjoyed just going out for a short ride in the surrounding area. She called it “God’s country”. Besides traveling, Sylvia enjoyed reading, crafting, jigsaw puzzles, word finds, coloring and most of all bingo. Failing eyesight gradually prevented Sylvia from many of these activities (but not bingo!), but she never lost her cheerful, upbeat attitude. She was also very proud of her Polish heritage, keeping many traditions alive.
She was also a Chicago Cubs fan. Not just any fan, but a die-hard fan – since 1945. One of her happiest moments was when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016.
Sylvia was strong in her faith, and love of God, family, and country. She died peacefully at her daughter’s home, but not before the deer she was always looking for when she was over came to the yard one more time.
Sylvia is predeceased by her parents; infant siblings, Joey and Stephanie; brother, Adam; sister, Jean (late Edward) Hudik; niece, Carol (late Bob) Skocz; and nephew, Michael Hudik. She leaves behind daughter Joan (Bob) Piotrowski; and nephew, David (Lisa) Hudik; one great-niece and 3 great-nephews.
