On April 8, 1931 Verdeen Elizabeth was born to Ben and Hertha (Noetzelman) Schulz in rural Garfield. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith at St John’s Lutheran Church in Garfield, MN and attended school in Garfield as well.
Verdeen was united in marriage at St John’s to Roger Rey of Barrett, MN on October 10, 1948. They made their home in rural Barrett until 1968, when they moved to Alexandria. She always felt her primary position was that of a wife, mother and eventually a Grama but did work as a waitress in a couple of cafes in Alex to take up some “extra time”. Verdeen was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed embroidery, playing cards, feeding the back yard birds and spending countless hours with Roger in their Travco motorhome. Verdeen proudly kept a spotless house until she became a Grama; then “these little fingerprints were just too cute to get rid of!” She and Roger were both active members at Zion Lutheran Church of Alex.
Verdeen’s finest and most favorite times were spent entertaining family and friends, while sharing her latest dessert or bar creations, having coffee at the table and getting caught up on the latest news anyone wanted to share. She was considered a dear friend to many.
Verdeen was preceded in death by her parents and husband Roger. She is survived by her daughter Pam (Curt) Hadley of Sartell, son Terry (Andrea) of Wayzata, step children Darlene Rittenbach, Detroit Lakes and Glen of St Joseph, brother Dagnie (Marlys) Schulz of Eagle Lake, Grandchildren Dustin Hadley of Minneapolis, Shane Post of Sartell, Suzanne Rey of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Lindsay (Lambert) Brown of Plymouth, John Rey of Coon Rapids and Ben (Sarah) Johnson of St. Louis Park, 9 great grandchildren and two nephews Randy and Scott Schulz and her niece Michele Schulz who always held a special place in her heart.
Verdeen's family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Knute Nelson and her physician for the excellent and compassionate care she was given during her stay.
