Verdell Lenora Krueger was born October 9, 1931 to Walter and Adelia (Della) Freudenberg in Parkers Prairie, MN. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Parkers Prairie. She was confirmed on June 10, 1945. Verdell attended Country School District 11 until the 8th grade. Verdell grew up on the family farm helping with daily chores until the age of 21 when she left and got a job in a sewing factory in Minneapolis and later on took a job at Sears in the mailroom. She would return home for weekends to hang out with her friends, only to meet the future love of her life Alvin at the dance hall in Miltona. Verdell was a catch; at one point she had two guys trying to date her, but Alvin won her over. Verdell found out later that when she was younger and played softball with her friends she actually was playing against her future husband. Verdell came home and started working at American Laundry until Alvin asked her to marry him.
On December 10, 1955 Verdell married Alvin Winfred Krueger at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley, MN. After Alvin and Verdell got married, they moved to St. Cloud until Alvin’s dad asked them to come home and help on the family farm. Verdell worked many years by her husband’s side with farming. Verdell and Alvin were blessed with 3 children who also helped on the family farm with cows, sheep, pigs and chickens until the farm was hit with a hailstorm. Verdell then went on to work at Mr. D’s Café and Viking Café helping with making food and keeping the salad bar stocked. Verdell eventually made her way back to working at American Laundry until she retired. Once Verdell retired, Alvin also decided to retire. They sold the farm and moved into Alexandria where they taxi’d their grandchildren to sport events, 4-H and dance. Verdell also helped with day care duties occasionally.
Verdell was very active in the VFW with her husband. She held the position of Auxiliary President. She is a life member of the VFW and both her and Alvin would help out at the fair taking tickets at the gate during fair season. When Verdell was not helping out on the farm or being the president of the auxiliary, she would help with FFA, 4-H, and watch her grandchildren play sports or dance. Once Verdell retired, she enjoyed doing word search, watching the Twins baseball, and Crochet. The grandkids enjoyed visiting Verdell and always ended up staying longer than expected because she got them interested in watching the Hallmark Channel or had them help her bake or make pickles.
Verdell L Krueger died on January 5th at the Long Prairie Nursing Home at the age of 93 years old.
