Verla Briese was born January 30, 1926 in Woodside Township, MN, the daughter of William and Marie (Noetzelman) Briese. She was baptized and confirmed at Esther Lutheran Church. She attended Joy country school. Verla worked outside her home since age twelve. After school she worked at Hook Anderson Caf� in Parkers Prairie. At age sixteen she moved to Minneapolis and took a machine shop course at Minnesota Aircraft during the day and worked as a bell hop at the Sheridan Hotel at night. She began working for General Manufacturing until the end of World War II. After the war Verla worked for White Castle in Minneapolis as counter help for four years. White Castle promoted her to supervisor; she as the first woman White Castle promoted to that position. In 1952 Verla moved to California and worked in a toy factory in Santa Anna. She returned to Minnesota and married to D.L. (Donald) Guy on December 13, 1952 in Duluth, MN. The couple made their home at Parkers Prairie, MN. Verla and D.L. operated a produce business, buying eggs and produce and distributing their goods. Verla drove a produce truck for three years. After D.L. became disabled Verla took an accounting course at Wadena Technical College. In 1970 she began working for Cenex, a job she held for the next eight years. In 1968 Verla and D.L. moved to Alexandria, MN to a home on Lake Darling. D.L. died in April 1979 and Verla continued to make her home on the lake. She began working as a home health aide homemaker. Verla liked to garden, she was skilled at growing vegetables, fruit trees and flowers. She enjoyed cooking and canning, Bingo, dancing, golfing and travel. She visited most of the States in the United States. She appreciated the outdoors, animals, wildlife and healthy living. She thought highly of education, hard work and family values. Verla was past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary. She was a member of the the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries and the Degree of Honor. On Tuesday, May 20, 2014 Verla died at the age of eighty-eight years. She was preceded in death by her husband, D.L. Guy; her parents; sisters, Lucella Conlin, Ruth O?Hern and Luanne Briese; and brothers, Melvin Briese, Elroy Briese, Lawrence Briese, Arthur Briese, Bernard Briese and Raymond Briese. Verla is survived by her sisters, Lillian Hemquist and Eleanor Mattocks; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A Celebration of Life will be held Noon to 4 PM, July 25, 2014 at the Prairie Event Center in Parkers Prairie, MN. Verla was interred in Parkers Prairie Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include Terry Briese, Edward Theusch, Randy Theusch, Bruce O'Hern, Stephen O'Hern and Kevin O'Hern.
