Wallace Elwin Miller was born October 10, 1925 in Dewey Township, WI, the son of R. Philip and Elsie (Lundell) Miller. Wally attended grades 1-8 at Maple Grove country school, and then at Shell Lake, WI where he graduated from high school. Wally was living in Amery, WI when he met Doris Hansen, the love of his life. On July 9, 1953 Wally and Doris were united in marriage at Lands Lutheran Church in Hoffman, MN. The couple made their home in Amery where they began raising a family. They were blessed with two children, Rhoda and Arden. In the late 1950?s Wally moved his family to Alexandria, MN. He began working at First Lutheran Church as the custodian in 1959. Then in 1979 he began working as a custodian for Lincoln Elementary School. He also did custodial work for a bank and the Douglas County Library. In 1983 Wally and Doris opened the Scandinavian Gift Shop in downtown Alexandria. Wally enjoyed serving others and helped wherever and whenever someone was in need. Wally was a longtime member of the Sons of Norway and First Lutheran Church. He and Doris traveled to Europe several times to visit family in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. He and Doris traveled throughout the United States. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, and was interested in family and regional history. Sharing his knowledge with his family was important to Wally. On January 26, 2014, Wally died at the age of eighty-eight years. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Phyllis Miller, and a brother, Paul Miller. Wally is survived by his wife of sixty years, Doris Miller of Alexandria; daughter, Rhoda Hagen and husband, Jim, of Velva, ND; son Arden Miller of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Andrew Hagen and wife Holly, Matthew Hagen and wife, Katie, and Eric Hagen; one brother, Delbert Miller, of Amery, WI; two sisters, Arlene Jones of Amery and Eleanor Palmberg of Amery; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The funeral service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, MN on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 11:00 AM. Reverend Greg Billberg will officiate. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria. Honorary pallbearers are Wally?s three grandsons. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at Anderson Funeral Home and also one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements are with Anderson Funeral Home.
