Walter “Walt” Christ Bakker aged 96 passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024 at Autumn Cottages, of Alexandria, Minnesota. He was born February 19, 1928 in Renville, Minnesota to parents Amos and Agnes (Aalderks) Bakker and grew up on his family farm in Renville.
Walter was united in marriage to Mabel Elizabeth Jensen on March 12, 1947. Together they had two sons, James and Barry Bakker. The couple resided in Renville, Vesta and Hanley Falls during their working years while they were raising their family. During this time Walter managed Grain Elevators in Vesta and Hanley Falls.
Walter was also active in Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls and he volunteered at the Hanley Falls Fire Department.
In 1986 Walter and Mabel retired to their home on Lake Mary, Alexandria and spent their winters in Mission, Texas. They were members of First Lutheran Church and Walter drove school buses for Alexandria Bus Company. He also volunteered for many years at the Douglas County Fair. He enjoyed playing golf and spent many days on the golf course. Walter and Mabel loved traveling and were able to travel all over the world, including; Spain, Alaska, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and many other destinations.
He is survived by two sons James (Shari) Bakker of Mora, MN and Barry (Lyn) Bakker of Willmar, MN, Five grandchildren; Courtney (Daniel) Budimir, Chana (Wade) Lennox, Chase Bakker, Timothy (Lisa) Bakker and Kelly (Nathan) Ziemann. Also surviving are ten great-grandchildren; Zachary Budimir, Lauren Budimir, Jackson Lennox, Cooper Lennox, Cade Bakker, Nash Bakker, Abigail Ziemann, Noah Ziemann, Graham Bakker and Grayson Bakker, and a special friend Beverly Thoennes, other relatives and friends.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents Amos and Agnes Bakker, his beloved wife Mabel Elizabeth Bakker, three sisters and one brother.
To honor Walter’s life a Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM on October 18, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church located at 1655 18th Ave E (S McKay Ave), Alexandria, MN 56308 followed by a Memorial Service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This gathering will offer family and friends an opportunity to celebrate his life and share memories.
