Wanda Bettermann

Wanda Marie Barsness was born July 26, 1938 in Starbuck, MN, the daughter of Ervin and Neva (Pennie) Barsness. She lived in Starbuck and Evansville before her family moved to Alexandria. She attended school in Alexandria where she graduated from high school. Following school Wanda worked as a waitress and doing babysitting.

In 1958 Wanda was united in marriage to William Larson. They made their home in Moorhead, MN. Wanda was blessed with three children. She moved her family to Alexandria where she did waitressing at the Algon Ballroom. While working at the ballroom Wanda met Lester Bettermann. The two were married in 1973 and made their home on Lester’s farm near Garfield, MN.

Wanda worked with Lester for many years helping with farm chores and running a household. Hospitality was very important to Wanda. She loved showing her hospitality through her baking and cooking abilities. Family and visitors were always treated to her meals and baked goods. She was known for her pies and cookies. Going out meeting new people and delivering a batch of fresh cookies was something she loved doing.

Wanda also loved spending time with her grandchildren. She taught herself to use a computer. Wanda looked forward to attending the Red Willow concert series at the courthouse lawn. In September of 2016 Wanda retired from farm life and her and Lester moved to Grand Arbor.

On Tuesday, May 22, 2018 Wanda died at the age of seventy-nine years. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sons, Mark Larson and Bruce Larson. Wanda is survived by her husband, Lester Bettermann of Alexandria; daughter, Michele Wagner and husband, Clifford, of Garfield; grandchildren, Joshua Wagner and wife, Nancy, Danial Wagner, Lucas Kremer and Amber Larson; great grandchildren, Emily Wagner, Jeffrey Kremer and Natalie Kremer; one brother, Julian Barsness and wife, Ruth, of Alexandria; and one sister, Anita Iverson of Alexandria.

A memorial service will be held 11 AM, Saturday, May 26, 2018 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Garfield. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Friday, May 25 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria and one hour prior to the service at church. Arrangements are with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria, MN.
