William John was born on July 27, 1925, in St. Paul, Minnesota the son of Charles and Bertha (Bowser) Baumann. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corp and his highest rank held was Staff Sargent. He received an award from the French government for his service. Throughout his life Bill worked as a cook in St. Paul and drove bus for several years in the Twin Cities. He later retired to Alexandria. Bill will be remembered for always being there for his children, Saturday morning grocery shopping, his love to cook, fishing and he enjoyed having garage sales. He also enjoyed gardening, putting puzzles together, playing cards and going to the casino. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Ducks Unlimited and Viking Sportsmen. He was very involved at Zion Lutheran Church as a Lay Minister and helped with the filming at church. Bill died on Saturday, August 2, 2014. He is survived by sons: Thomas (Sandy), Robert (Molly), John (Connie); daughters: Carol (Mike) Moore, Mary Lou (Alan) Olsen, Laurie (Randy) Gerding; 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, sisters: Myrtle Bowman, Lavern Brett, Helen Ciano, brother, Tom Spurrier. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve; parents, brother, Wayne; sisters: Grace, Agnes. Funeral service was held on Wednesday, August 6, 2014, 2:00 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Burial was at Kinkead Cemetery. Military Honors by American Legion Post 87, VFW Post 936, VVA Post 235 Rifle Squad and the Minnesota Honor Guard.
