OBITUARY
William Joseph Zimmel, the son of Albert and Margaret (Jennissen) Zimmel, was born March 17, 1919 in Belle River Township. He attended District 92 school and worked on the farm with his father.
On October 16, 1945, Bill was united in marriage to his next door sweetheart, Louise Steidl, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Belle River. They made their home on the family farm which Bill took over from his parents. They spent their entire life raising their family on the same farm. Bill milked cows, raised pigs, cattle, and chickens. He raised different crops and baled many loads of hay with Louise driving the tractor. He retired from farming in 2002. Bill had a stroke in 2004 but continued helping on the farm as he was able; he loved driving the tractor.
Bill was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and of St. Nicholas Church. He loved doing puzzles and playing cards; especially whist, cribbage and solitaire. Bill kept the farmer in himself alive by helping out with the lawn work and garden.
On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, Bill died peacefully at the age of ninety-six years. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda, and his parents. Bill is survived by his wife, Louise Zimmel of Carlos; one sister, Edwina Schmidt of Alexandria; two children, Marlene (Harold) Bettin of Alexandria and Donald (Sandi) Zimmel of Brooklyn Park, MN; two nieces, Joyce and Marsha Steidl, whom they loved and raised for many years; five grandchildren, Bill Bettin, Michelle Bettin, Molly Lipke, Mark Zimmel and Ellen Zimmel; seven great grandchildren, Morgan Bettin-Coleman, Quinten Bettin, Jackson Bettin, Violet Bettin, Logan Lipke, Madison Lipke and Paige Lipke; and three great nieces, Heather, Shawna, and Bobbi Jo.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, October 10, 2015 at St. Nicholas Church. Reverend Father Andy Marthaler was the celebrant. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Casket bearers included Greg Schmidt, Carter Schmidt, Mark Zimmel, Bill Bettin, Scott Botzet and Joel Botzet.
